How To Prepare



The Tour de Hood is 132 miles over two days, including over 14,000 feet of climbing. Proper preparation will include distance riding, hill climbing,  and solid fueling and hydration both before and during the ride. A well-running bicycle is also a must.

Prepare your bike:

A well running bicycle should include:

  • Working gears and brakes
  • A variety of gearing for conquering hills, flat and rolling terrain, and descents
  • Properly inflated tires with minimal wear and no cuts or gashes
  • True and easily spinning wheels
  • Comfortable saddle that you have spent time riding on
  • Proper bike fit, to ensure comfort during long rides

Prepare your body and mind:

The dates of the 2010 ride are June 5,6. Most riders preparing for a ride this challenging should be riding their bicycles at least three times per week for the past several months, with longer rides on the weekends.

Pack for the Ride:

Bike Equipment:

  • A good bicycle with tires, gears and brakes in good condition
  • ANSI or Snell approved helmet
  • Small repair kit including: a tire, spare tube, tire irons, patch kit, multi-tool (including Allen wrench)
  • Rear view mirror
  • Water bottles and cages (2)
  • Frame pump or CO2 cartridges
  • Rag
  • Bike lock & cable (optional, in case you want to park your bike at the expo)
Clothing:

  • Cycling Jerseys
  • Cycling Shorts
  • Sweat-wicking undershirt
  • Jacket
  • Cycling tights or leg warmers
  • Rain gear
  • Socks
  • Cycling Shoes
  • Cycling shoe booties
  • Cycling Gloves (including long figured gloves)
  • Under helmet cap
  • Sweatband
First Aid:

  • Sun screen
  • Lip balm
  • Chamois cream
  • Any personal medications, inhalers, allergy or bee sting kits.
  • Insurance card
  • Aspirin or other pain killer
  • Band-Aids
  • Disposable bags
  • Insect repellent
  • Ointment
Miscellaneous:

  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Food and drink mix, if you have allergies or have specific riding food or drink needs
  • Watch or cycling computer
  • ID (driver’s license)
  • Money/ credit cards
  • Toilet paper (just in case)
  • Cell phone for emergency contact (Be aware, however, that cell service is not available on all sections of the ride course)
